Municipal planning Strategy and Land Use By-Law Plan Review

The Municipality of the County of Cumberland is undertaking a focused and strategic update of its Municipal Planning Strategy (MPS) and Land Use By-law (LUB). Public Engagement for this project is currently on-going.

Missed an Egagement Session? Its not too late to provide feedback

Complete the survey to provide your feedback on the priority topics within the plan review. Your input is an important part of the review process and will help shape the rules around land use in the future. The survey is anonymous and will take about 10 minutes to complete.

Sample Questions from the Survey:

  • What do you think is needed for farms and homes to exist together in harmony?

  • How have you seen agricultural (farm) land change across Cumberland County in your lifetime?

  • When thinking about how you currently access the coast as a member of the public, what does that trip or experience look like? When thinking about the future, where and how would you like to access the coast?

  • What shoreline protection options would you like to see used locally? How are these the same or different than what is currently used?

  • Where in Cumberland County would you like to see more retirement homes and/or supportive housing?

  • What questions do you have around wind, solar, and hydrogen development?

There is also space for you to provide your thoughts on any topics or “ challenging areas ” we may have missed! Thank you for taking the time to provide your valuable feedback.

What is a Bylaw/Plan Review ?

What are the themes of the review?

The major themes of the review include:

  • Goal: Develop robust municipal policies to address the growing risks of coastal erosion and flooding due to climate change, securing a safer future for our coastal communities.

  • Goal: Explore zoning solutions to increase the supply of diverse and affordable housing options in serviced areas, supporting complete and livable communities.

  • Goal: Refine agricultural zoning to better protect truly productive farmland and formally identify agricultural marshland conservation areas, while freeing up other rural lands for appropriate development.

  • Goal: Establish a modern, regulatory framework that guides the placement and scale of commercial renewable energy projects (including wind, solar, and emerging technologies like green hydrogen) while balancing energy goals with community and environmental protection.
